Spring weather arrived early for many parts of the nation, including the Dallas/Fort Worth region. For some people, the arrival of spring brings symptoms of seasonal allergies — sneezing, wheezing, watery eyes and a running nose. However, you can take steps to get your allergies under control.
Start with these 3 strategies to get some relief.
1. Reduce exposure to allergy triggers. Each spring, trees release billions of tiny pollen grains into the air. When you breathe them into your nose and lungs, they can trigger an allergic reaction. Staying inside can help, especially on windy days and during the early morning hours, when pollen counts are highest. When you do head outdoors, wear sunglasses to keep pollen out of your eyes. A filter mask can help when you mow the lawn or work in the garden.
2. Take allergy medicine. Antihistamines block your body’s response to allergies. Over-the-counter allergy medications are used to stop allergy symptoms temporarily. However, they do nothing to relieve the cause of your allergies. For more severe allergies, try a nasal spray. But don’t expect symptoms to vanish right away.
3. Try immunotherapy solutions. Once you know what you’re allergic to, you can use immumotherapy to desensitize your body to allergens. Immumotherapy works by introducing allergens to your body, via serum, in small doses either by shots or sublingual (under the tongue) drops. Both shots and drops are effective on children and adults of all ages.
